FUCHS PETROLUB SE, which operates globally in the lubricants sector, is acquiring ULTRACHEM INC. The Delaware-based company is well known as producer and marketer of specialty synthetic lubricants for the compressor OEM and industrial maintenance markets for over 40 years.

With this acquisition the FUCHS PETROLUB Group expands its portfolio in the field of industrial specialty lubricants in the U.S. The business will continue to be operated out of its New Castle Delaware location.

ULTRACHEM employs 25 people and generated sales of €15.35 mn in its fiscal year 2015/2016, almost all of that in North America.

“Industrial oils specialties is a core focus product segment and has been an area of interest to us for quite some time. FUCHS has a leading position in Europe and we will use ULTRACHEM as a nucleus to grow the business in the United States.” said Steve Puffpaff, CEO of FUCHS LUBRICANTS COMPANY. “The acquisition, and especially the ULTRACHEM team, will significantly enlarge our existing business and will help to grow it using FUCHS know-how and marketplace presence. .”

The parties expect that the transaction will be effective August 1, 2016.

In 2015, the FUCHS Group accounted for €2.1 bn sales with staff of 4,823. FUCHS LUBRICANTS CO. (USA) made €263 mn sales with 349 employees.

“What is the best type of oil to use in my vacuum pump?” is a common question for sure, and one that may often yield confusing and conflicting answers. The rule of thumb is that it is always best to follow OEM recommendations, but why do they recommend the lubricants that they do? For the purpose of this article, we will focus on some of the general industrial vacuum pump applications and their lubricant choices.

Cooling, controlling contamination, reducing friction, and creating fluid seals are just a few of the many important responsibilities the lubricant serves. The chosen lubricant must fill all of these roles effectively and efficiently to promote healthy and long equipment life. Vacuum pump applications are somewhat unique due to the relationship between the oil’s volatility and vapor pressure. An oil that is more volatile is more likely to turn from a liquid to a vapor as temperatures increase. Because vacuum pumps operate with such tight tolerances in regard to pressure, any differentiating factor can be detrimental to the intended operation of the pump. Choosing a lubricant with a low vapor pressure will ensure the system operates efficiently.

   ICML is an independently chartered organization consisting of both paid professional staff members and volunteer councils.

The question often arises; “Why spend the extra money?” Why buy a synthetic PAO, Diester, PAG or POE rather than a severely hydro-treated “synthetic” petroleum? When one compares synthetic PAO (Polyalphaolefin, API Group IV) to synthetic petroleum (API Group III), one can expect to see the same clear color, similar specific gravity, and similar VI (viscosity index). VI is a measure of how an oil will thin out under high temperature. It is one of the properties used to distinguish synthetic fluids from mineral based fluids and is very important to OEM’s who manufacture hot and cold running equipment.

So what are the benefits that justify the added expense of synthetic PAO? When comparing physical properties from a Technical Data Sheet or MSDS, we should recognize a major difference in pour point. ASTM test method D97, measures the lowest temperature at which a given fluid will flow. A typical PAO will have a pour point of -60°F while a typical Group III will pour down to about -35°F. So, if you are operating equipment outdoors in Northern winter climates, you will see that justification very quickly. However, what if your equipment is safe and warm within your shop or factory? How do I justify synthetics?

December 1st, 2013 Training Requirements for the Revised Hazard Communication Standard

OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to align with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and published it in the Federal Register in March 2012 (77 FR 17574). Two significant changes contained in the revised standard require the use of new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), formerly known as, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs). The new label elements and SDS requirements will improve worker understanding of the hazards associated with the chemicals in their workplace. To help companies comply with the revised standard, OSHA is phasing in the specific requirements over several years (December 1, 2013 to June 1, 2016). For detailed information, click here.

Remember when private label “economy” brands were viewed as bottom-of-the-barrel products, packaged in black and white containers and stored strictly on the bottom shelf? Based on modern consumer trends, those days appear to be far behind us. The private-branded consumer goods market has evolved into booming international business. Using high-turnover consumer goods as the metric, private label brands accounted for 17% of global sales in 2011 and currently comprise over $90 billion in product sales in the U.S. alone (Nielsen, 2011). Rising national brand prices and a tough economy are certainly drivers for the trend, but they do not tell the full story. The store-brand image has progressed into standards on par with national brands through improved packaging, a closer focus on quality, and enhanced market positioning. The customer’s perception of store-brand quality and value has grown more stable leading to a higher willingness to try alternative goods as a result of the aforementioned improvements.

But what does this mean for private branding opportunities within B2B sectors? Is this information at all relevant in industrial markets? The answer is a resounding yes! Although there is a clear-cut difference in convenience goods like toothpaste and shopping/specialty goods like expensive filters for industrial systems, the same rules apply regarding consumer perceptions and acceptance of alternative brands. Boiled down to basics, if a product has a coherent, attractive marketing package that emanates quality and imparts confidence, it will make the process of building trust with the consumer and subsequent order generation progress much smoother. With a little product planning and marketing elbow grease, rebranding with a custom private label solution can be a powerful tool in facilitating sales to the consumer and giving your company, regardless of size, a strong identity within your market. Ultrachem has developed a new line of high-performance synthetic lubricants – the Chemlube Plus Series – designed to be used in a wide variety of rotary screw and rotary vane compressors. True universal lubricants, the series is fully compatible with most OEM Rotary Screw compressor oils and can be used to top off and replace existing fluids. The lubricants are made with a very thermally and oxidatively stable polyol ester (POE) blend. These oils were designed to take advantage of superior lubricating properties inherent in polyol esters, and yet be economical, by combining them with less expensive synthetics. These fully synthetic premium lubricants are formulated to form less varnish under high temperature applications and to be more resistant to acidic intake air than the polyalkylene glycol (PAG) coolants. Under normal operating conditions users can expect to obtain up to 11,000 hours of lubricant service life in rotary screw compressors. The line is available in ISO grades 32, 46 and 68.
